Content Accessibility Raises Course Pass Rate for Disabled Students

From e-courses and catalogs to admission forms and syllabi, university content is proliferating. These documents need to be web accessible for all — even to students with disabilities. However, faculty is accustomed to creating content as inaccessible PDFs.

In this webinar, you’ll learn how Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) uses Equidox to easily convert inaccessible PDFs to HTML that conforms to the WCAG 2.0 AA standard — the World Wide Web Consortium’s guideline for web accessibility.

Using the solution, NOVA has significantly reduced its PDF to HTML conversion time. In fact, Tim Ferebee — the school’s web accessibility coordinator — mentions that the college used other tools in the past to convert a 250-page student handbook. This process took 20 days during a slow period. But using Equidox during the same time of year would have taken the school only one to two days.

Accelerating the speed to create accessible documents is paramount to improving accommodations and efficiencies for hearing as well as cognitively and visually impaired students. Mr. Ferebee explains, “Students with disabilities can quickly fall behind when documents, supplies and course materials are not available to them.”

Since Equidox has drastically reduced the document conversion time, the college can provide students the information they need — when they need it, resulting in more successful student outcomes. In fact, Equidox has empowered NOVA to increase its course pass rate for disabled students from 45 percent up to 75 percent in just a one year time period.

The webinar also provides a quick demo of the product so you can witness its powerful features, including:
